W4G Track Recovery secured the return of a Vauxhall Corsa valued at £16,000 after it was not returned at the end of a rental agreement. Despite the vehicle having been fitted with false plates, the tracking device’s VIN match confirmed its true identity, allowing our agent to locate and secure it.
This was an overdue rental. The vehicle had gone missing at the point it should have been returned to the rental company, with no contact from the hirer. Once the case was passed to W4G Track Recovery, our agent used the vehicle’s tracking data to locate it.
On locating the vehicle, the agent found it was now displaying false number plates – a common tactic used to disguise a vehicle’s identity and delay recognition. However, the Corsa’s VIN (vehicle identification number) matched the original rental record, confirming it was the correct vehicle despite the changed plates.
Once the vehicle was secured, the agent noted damage to the dashboard where there had been obvious attempts to remove the tracking device.
Overdue and unreturned rental vehicles are a persistent challenge for car rental and leasing companies. As this case shows, a vehicle can be deliberately disguised with false plates to delay recovery – but a correctly fitted, hardwired tracking device with VIN verification means the vehicle’s true identity can’t be hidden that easily. The attempted tracker tampering in this case is also a reminder of why a covert, professionally installed device matters: a poorly hidden tracker is a tracker a determined thief will find and try to remove.
